As National Divorce Day hits at the start of January, we’ve seen a significant increase in couples not fighting over who gets the house, the children and the cars, but a shift towards super scraps over their pups!

Celebrities are no exception, with many of our favourite couples not only breaking our hearts by splitting up, but by using their dogs as cannon fodder in the process.

Kirsten Stewart and Robert Pattinson

The KPattz cheating drama of 2012 hit tweens hard, and despite the fact that Kirsten and Robert tried to make it work, they eventually went their separate ways a year later. Forced to pick between this regrettable uncoupling were their pooches, Bear and Bernie. After moving out of their home together, Robert took the dogs, much to the dismay of Kirsten Stewart who was left not only without her Twilight soulmate, but without her best friends too.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon

It seems that in spite of the financial prenuptial arrangement that Mariah and Nick Cannon entered into, they failed to include their treasured pets, which left them with a messy custody battle for their eight dogs.

Even though celebrity exes give the impression that dividing custody of their children is a walk in the park, when it comes to their pets, it appears to be harder to split time spent with each of the twosome. A recent development shows couples are now taking extra precautionary measures by employing a puppy pre-nup to make sure that, if they do split, they have already mutually decided the fate of their canine companion.
