Parents will always want to offer guidance to their youngsters, but there are some mistakes that you just have to make for yourself.
Here are ten examples of times we wish we’d listened to our parents:
When they told you to “Just be yourself”
For an awkward teen, ‘being yourself’ can seem like the most terrifying concept in the world. Being keen to fit in and be part of that dominant, cool culture, can often mean forgetting what you’re all about. Thankfully, it’s not a problem that seems to stick around for many of us though, and the ‘coolest’ people often end up being the ones that aren’t afraid to be themselves.
When they told you to “Know your limits”
Whether it’s simply spending too much on a shopping trip or missing half the party because you had your head stuck down a toilet, knowing your limits was another piece of advice that tends to fall on deaf ears, but one that should definitely be adhered to.
When they told you “Don’t be in a rush to grow up”
How many times did you think ‘If I just get to this age then I can…”? Talk about an anti-climax! Work, bills, taking the bins out – adult life is fraught with responsibilities that mean being a grown up isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
When they told you to “Drive sensibly”
When our survey revealed that 70% of drivers have never used a green P plate once they’d passed, it brought back a fair few memories of our parent’s advice about being on the road. It doesn’t matter how many times you were told to drive sensibly, most of us had to learn the hard way – which usually involved a few bumps and scratches.
When they told you to “Seize the day”
Sometimes, you just wish that you’d done more with your weekend, with your day, with your hour out in the sunshine on our lunch break! Making the most of every moment is certainly something that seems to get more important as your get older.
When they told you “You need your sleep”
There comes an age where everyone seems to have a dawning appreciation for bedtime. There’s nothing better than waking up refreshed after a goodnight’s sleep. Not only does it make you feel ready to face the day, but it also carries some serious health benefits.
When they told you to “Follow your dreams”
Ok, so maybe your parents didn’t tell you to “follow your dreams” or “do what you love”, but if they did, then it was probably good advice, right? Far too many of us end up going along with the ebb and flow of life without actually grasping what we wanted with both hands, from a younger age.
When they told you that “If you don’t ask, you don’t get”
When you’ve missed out on things because you didn’t chance your arm, it can be a really disappointing experience. When you see someone more outspoken getting what they want, however, we tend to be a bit more vocal about what we want to need – whether it’s a promotion at work or the last chocolate biscuit!
When they told you to “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”
It’s easy, when you’re a bit younger, to get obsessive over one thing, letting other things fall by the wayside. Getting a new best friend, for example, and spending all your time with them, only to later discover that when they let you down, you don’t actually have anyone else to turn to! Keeping your options open and spreading your time as evenly as possible is a definite.
It seems there’s just no telling some of us… but that doesn’t mean you can’t make up for lost time. If there’s one thing we do know, it’s that older is definitely wiser!
